Evaluating Websites

1.Today we are going to evaluate a few websites. Before we begin, let's discuss a few questions.
  • What makes a good web site?
  • How do you choose good web sites for projects?
2. Now take a look at these sites and answer questions about the animals.
Jackalopes
**Before given the name Jackalope, what was this animal commonly known as?
**What is the average lifespan of a Northern Spotted Owl?
Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus
**What is the scientific name for the Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus?
Gray Wolf
**What is a wolf pack?
3. Now that you have completed the web search, discuss the following:
  • Would you include information from these web sites in your project? Why or why not?
  • What did you like about these sites?  What did you not like?
  • Did you find the web sites believable? Yes? No?
  • Are the information sources truth worthy? How do you know?
  • Did the pictures make the information seem more believable?
  • Did you ask yourself... Does this make sense?
  • If something is on the Internet does that mean it is true and accurate?
  • Who wrote/published the information on the site?
  • What are the author's credentials?
  • Who is sponsoring publication of the site?
4. What did you learn from this lesson about evaluating websites?

Room 10,

Yesterday Alvarado upgraded its Computer Network to 1 Gigabyte connection. The person who installed the connection for us told me that means that 1 gigabyte of information could move through our lines per second. Today we are going to test the line and see how it is working.

These are what you should be looking for while you are testing (evaluating) our new connection.
  • Do the websites load faster than before?
  • When you play a game or do an activity does it stop at sometime while you are playing?
  • Does the website crash and give you an error message?
These are three sites we had problems using before. Please check each of them out. Let's all work together so we can see if traffic effects the connection.

1.  You are a Native American living in California. The padres are building a Mission and they insist you help build their Mission.  They have cut your hair and forced you to wear clothing that is not comfortable. You work 17 hours per day and cannot eat your traditional food. If you complain you are whipped and beaten.  The worst is they do not let you practice your traditions. Think about how this would make you feel.  How would you respond?

2.  You are a Spanish priest. You are in charge of a group of Native Americans who have been forced into helping you build a part of the Mission. They do not seem like they are happy with what they are doing.  They often yell insults at you in their own language and you are afaid one of the workers may try to hurt you.  You cannot understand why they do not like to go to church services on Sunday. You feel like they should be glad that the Spanish have introduced them to God.Think about how this would make you feel. How would you respond?

Happy New Year to you all! I hope it is going well so far in 2011. For today's blog

I would like for you to think about two questions and then post a response on the school's blog site. First question is: What is your resolution for 2011? In other words, what do you want to do better or differently this year? Also, I want you to think about, if you could change one thing about our school, what would it be? and why?
Below are the directions for posting to the blog. Write at least a paragraph (4-5 sentences)
